PRODUCT INFO

Spur Gear

The most common gear type used in machinery is the Spur Gear. Spur gears consist of straight teeth cut parallel to the shaft axis on a circular (cylindrical) gear body.

EVALUATION

Spur Gear advantages and important considerations

Advantages

  • The simplicity of the tooth design allows for both very high precision and easy manufacturability.
  • The absence of axial load (i.e. thrust force parallel to the gear axis) enables high speed, high load capacity and high efficiency.

Important Considerations

  • Noise produced under load and at high speeds is a drawback.
  • Many spur gears must be combined to achieve a high reduction ratio.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Spur Gear how is it manufactured?

01 / METHOD

Milling

A rotating cutter removes material to produce the desired cross-section profile.

02 / METHOD

Turning

The gear blank rotates while the cutting tool advances, removing material to produce the desired profile.

03 / METHOD

Cutting

The gear profile is produced using laser, plasma, water-jet or wire EDM methods.

04 / METHOD

Casting

Molten metal is poured into a mold to form the gear shape — suitable for mass production.

AREAS OF USE

Spur Gear in which sectors is it used?

Spur gears transmit motion and power between parallel shafts that are in contact with each other. They are the simplest and most economical gear type to manufacture.
